National park Wieden-Weerribben

Rietveld Landscape is concerned about the tendency of the Dutch bureaucracy to create an endless chain of snippets of new nature and of “compensation nature”. We argue for a concentration of the National Ecological Network at the most importation locations of the Dutch delta.

By means of the Vollenhove Archipelago, the Wieden and Weerribben are joined together to become a vast natural reserve of European standing. The symbiosis between nature, cultural history and recreation creates the ultimate new landscape. In the Wieden-Weerriben park, an archipelago of nature islands with unique pioneering situations will develop. They provide ideal conditions for quaking bog and the otter’s habitat. Like the old thatched barns, the “Black Ravens” heighten the tension in the archipelago without disturbing it. This new area will become part of one single and unique sailing landscape that stretches out all the way to the Frisian Lakes. At the edges of the Wieden-Weerribben park new opportunities will be created for the centuries-old and world-renowned reed culture.
